Who is BKV?
BKV is a forward-thinking energy company focused on the safe, responsible development of low-carbon energy across the full energy value chain, including natural gas, midstream infrastructure, power generation and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). Through a closed-loop approach, BKV supports sustainable energy growth for the future. BKV is planning to expand into Louisiana with CCS projects backed by decades of subsurface and infrastructure experience. We work closely with regulators and local communities to ensure strong oversight, transparency and long-term partnership.
What is the Donaldsonville Project?
BKV dCarbon Ventures is developing a CCS project in Ascension Parish and southern Louisiana. The Donaldsonville Project is expected to support local jobs, generate direct tax revenue over the life of the project and contribute to local services and economic development.
The Donaldsonville Sequestration Site is designed to safely store carbon dioxide (CO₂) deep underground within approximately 950 acres of leased land near Donaldsonville. The project is intended to support existing industrial operations and may help attract additional investment to the region, while creating long-term employment and economic opportunities.
Why Louisiana?
Louisiana’s geography is uniquely suitable for the sequestration process. The state’s deep oil and gas history and extensive pipeline system make Louisiana a prime option for carbon sequestration.
The ~950 acres BKV is evaluating for this sequestration site is located within one of the densest concentrations of CO₂ emissions in the United States, making it a practical location for continued carbon sequestration efforts.
- It does not have old oil and gas wells where the CO₂ will be stored.
- Subsurface geology includes suitable rock formations to safely store CO₂, with multiple thick layers above the storage zone to permanently contain it.
- The site is located near existing CO₂ pipeline infrastructure
- A well-established, highly trained workforce is available to support construction and operations.
The Donaldsonville Sequestration Site is positioned to serve the surrounding industrial corridor and support the region’s long-term competitiveness as demand for lower-carbon products continues to grow.
What is Carbon Capture?
CCS is the process of capturing CO₂ emissions before, or after, they are released into the atmosphere, then safely transporting and permanently sequestering it deep underground. CCS significantly reduces emissions associated with living near industrial facilities, supports efforts to address climate change, and creates and maintains jobs and economic benefits in local communities.
Commercial-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) efforts show that carbon sequestration is safe and effective when sites are well selected, correctly designed and operated properly. Scientists and engineers have developed technologies, built upon extensive fossil fuel research and expertise, to identify, reduce and mitigate the risks associated with carbon sequestration to ensure safe operation, such as tools that monitor each well 24/7, and can notify and immediately shut off wells that pose any risk.
BKV currently operates a CCS well in north Texas, has multiple additional projects on track to be operational soon and will apply this proven expertise in Louisiana, including the continuous identification and tracking of its own CO₂.
If the project receives state approval, it will be continuously monitored using federal and state-approved technologies. BKV will work under the oversight of the Louisiana Department of Conservation and in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to ensure that drinking water supplies are not affected by carbon sequestration.
The project has the potential to generate substantial tax revenue for the state of Louisiana at maximum storage capacity, while also helping secure hundreds of existing, well-paying jobs in the region by enabling local companies to meet their low-carbon targets. With a location well-suited to serve the industrial corridor, the project supports Louisiana businesses in remaining competitive and positions the state to benefit from future investment.
Our top priority is being a good neighbor, and from day one, we have engaged local leaders and community members to ensure the project aligns with the needs and values of Ascension Parish.
Join us at the upcoming Open House to learn more about the project and speak with the BKV team.
