Carbon capture, utilization,
and sequestration. It's here, and it's on.

Our carbon.
Our commitment.

No more passing the buck. It’s time for energy companies to know and own their impact. For BKV, Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) is the key to unlocking the way ahead toward sustainability.

Owning our impact

Our emissions are our responsibility, and we are owning our impact. Our strategy is straightforward. In our commitment to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for our owned and operated upstream and natural gas midstream operations by the early 2030s, we are taking concrete steps now to address our emissions first rather than purchasing carbon offsets alone.

Expertise and Connections

Our deep CCS knowledge and strong relationships with regulators across the United States give major advantages to innovative CCS initiatives.

Pioneering Projects

BKV’s Barnett Zero project is among the first Class II CO₂ injection well with an EPA-approved MRV plan, showcasing our leadership in advancing carbon sequestration technologies.

Mastering Compliance

BKV is at the forefront of CCS, navigating IRS and Treasury regulations for Section 45Q. With an early EPA approval for our MRV plan secured, Barnett Zero is set to deliver its first 45Q payment by Q3 2024.

What is carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS)?

CCUS reduces the amount of pollutive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by capturing and permanently sequestering it. Our process involves capturing CO₂ before it’s released into the atmosphere then compressing and transporting it via pipeline to be injected into underground injection control (“UIC”) wells.

Featured Project - Texas

Barnett Zero

This is our first purpose-drilled, Class II commercial carbon sequestration well injecting CO₂ waste from natural gas processing plants in the United States. It meets all Class VI construction standards and makes BKV one of the first energy companies in the nation to have commercial carbon capture and sequestration operations.

  • Location: Bridgeport, TX
  • Initial Injection: November 2023
  • Approximate Annual Sequestration Rate: 185,000 metric tons
of CO₂e
  • Daily, Barnett Zero can remove enough carbon to offset the emissions of 40,000 automobiles

In June 2022, BKV partnered with EnLink Midstream for our first major CCS project, Barnett Zero.

In eighteen months, this project moved from final investment decision to fully operational status.

Barnett Zero captures and sequesters CO₂ generated from BKV’s natural gas production in the Barnett Shale, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. EnLink transports the natural gas to its processing plant in Bridgeport, Texas, where the CO₂ waste stream is captured, compressed and sequestered via BKV’s nearby injection well.

The project aims to sequester up to 185,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, with a total capacity of 275,000 metric tons per year. Initial CO₂ injection began safely and ahead of schedule in November 2023 with approval from the Texas Railroad Commission and the EPA.

CCS in Action

To reshape the energy industry, we have to take climate change seriously.
Idley awaiting innovation just won’t do.

That’s why we’ve focused our efforts on point-to-point sequestration to capture carbon dioxide and permanently sequester it deep underground quickly, safely and profitably, completely offsetting the combustion value of our natural gas.

Additional CCUS Projects

High west

BKV partnered with NuQuest Energy to develop CO₂ sequestration facilities on 21,000 acres in Louisiana's St. Charles and Jefferson Parishes. The High West site, located within 15 miles of various emission sources, offers significant storage potential, estimated at 140 to 1,000 metric tons of CO₂e.

Donaldsonville

Located near Donaldsonville, Louisiana, the project will serve the south Baton Rouge industrial corridor. With ~1000 acres secured for long-term CO2 sequestration, advanced subsurface characterization and plume modeling indicate this project has the potential to sequester 1 million tonnes of CO2 per year for more than eleven years.

Cotton Cove

BKV’s dCarbon Ventures approved the Cotton Cove CCS project which will sequester 40,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually from Barnett gas production. It’ll also pilot technology to capture an additional 25,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually from low-concentration
