Case Study

From Implementation to Impact

“Provides verifiable, auditable data to track and communicate our net-zero journey with credibility.”

VADER – Visualization and Automation of Data for Emissions Reporting – systematically processes over 550 operational data fields (~4MM data points) monthly and was created through the following rigorous and iterative six-stage methodology designed to protect data integrity – a process we continue to refine as our data capabilities and operational needs evolve:

  1. Define Requirements:
Establishes emissions reporting needs using EPA's GHG Reporting Program (GHGRP) as our baseline with cross-functional collaboration between Operations, IT and EHSR.
  2. Identify Sources of Truth:
Catalogs authoritative sources for each data point to maintain consistency and traceability.
  3. Validate Data Quality:
Conducts comprehensive assessments and remediations of datasets for completeness and accuracy.
  4. Integrate Systems:
Establishes seamless data connections between operational systems for automated consolidation.
  5. Develop and Validate Queries:
Creates refined queries with IT to run systematic checks for outliers, duplicates and inconsistencies.
  6. Calculate and Report:
Validates data to feed into Validere for final calculations and regulatory reporting.

Validere: Third-Party Validation and Regulatory Compliance

VADER enables operational data feeds from BKV's data queries into Validere, our comprehensive repository and regulatory emissions calculation and reporting platform.

Validere serves as the critical bridge between our operational data and regulatory compliance, where GHG emissions calculations are completed for EPA reporting, carbon credit certification occurs and third-party auditors validate and assure data integrity for commercial products. This independent validation layer provides the credibility and traceability essential for CSG commercialization.

With multiple stages of VADER now operational, we expect the following benefits to grow as the system continues to expand:

  • Emissions Reduction:
Allows for more accurate tracking of operational activities, which enables more accurate emissions reporting. VADER also provides more visualization into ways we can improve the use of existing data to more accurately quantify our GHG emissions and reduce assumptions.
  • CSG Enablement:
Delivers auditable, traceable data supporting CSG, our Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon-neutral natural gas product.
  • Operational Efficiency:
Eliminates manual data consolidation, enabling consistent reporting across regulatory requirements and publications.
  • Financial Visibility:
Supports monthly calculation of GHG emissions, improving forecasting and budgeting accuracy with respect to reaching BKV's net-zero targets.
  • Gap Mitigation:
Systematically identifies and addresses data gaps while uncovering emission reduction opportunities and process improvements.
  • Scalability:
By establishing a dedicated source of truth for each data point, VADER helps streamline integration of acquired assets, positioning us for seamless future growth.
  • Net-Zero Confidence:
Provides verifiable, auditable data to track and communicate our net-zero journey with credibility. Monthly emissions calculations ensure BKV has ongoing insight into annual emissions status, allowing for proactive achievement of annual goals and targets.

Expanding the Digital Foundation

VADER provides the data-driven foundation needed to pursue our bold ambitions with confidence. What began as an emissions-focused initiative has evolved into a comprehensive framework for managing key environmental and operational data. By consolidating and improving data quality, we continue to gain clearer understanding of our assets, enabling us to mitigate risks, close data gaps and identify opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and unlock financial value.
